Prototyping what a new policy means for the NHS.

Organisations can waste time and money on building the wrong thing. And an apparently good idea can cause harm to users. Here’s how we help organisations do the right thing:

  • Discovery+: We test out early ideas within a Discovery phase, using sketches and quick prototypes. It stops us focussing on the wrong problem, and nudges research in the right direction. For example, during our work for GambleAware, we quickly realised providing a map of different support paths would overwhelm people, rather than reassure them.
  • Expert prototyping: We use a range of techniques to prototype everything from check-out flows, to payment models for EV charging, to a policy for improving mental health care. Prototypes help us reveal risks sooner.
  • Close collaboration: Working closely with stakeholders from different teams helps us to identify risks earlier, including technical, regulatory, and other potential challenges.

Fast-moving organisations often can’t afford to wait for research insights. Here’s how we share them sooner:

  • Sector specialisms: We have a set of sectors we understand in-depth: Public Services; Financial Services; Energy and Utilities; and Digital Retail. That means we can spend more of our time uncovering new insights and ideas, rather than telling you things you already know.
  • Efficient ‘research-ops’: We run 100s of research sessions each year. That means we’re efficient at planning sessions, recruiting people, and managing logistics on the day.
  • One-day labs: We always encourage stakeholders to observe research, but our one-day labs make it even easier. We edit down a round of five research sessions and play them back to senior stakeholders in a single morning.
  • Lightweight documentation: We use quick, collaborative tools like Miro and Mural. It means we can playback insights early and often.
