Mind the gaps – how to get more from discovery & alpha

Session type: Talk

Speakers: Amanda Payne and Mark Skinner

When: 29th September 2022

When is Discovery not enough? What happens in Alpha if you’re missing a key insight? In following the prescribed phases of service delivery, a team can sometimes risk being bound by the definitions of each phase – and miss opportunities to deepen understanding and gain buy-in.

In this talk Amanda Payne and Mark Skinner will identify opportunities to bridge the gaps between Discovery and Alpha phases – sharing our experience for when it’s a good idea to accelerate into ideation or return to uncovering user needs.

Is impact mapping a service designer’s secret weapon?

Session type: Workshop

Speakers: Nicola Pritchard and Hannah Whiteley

When: 29th September 2022

‘Impact’ has become a ubiquitous term that is hard to define and hard to measure. In this workshop we’ll be working through the steps of developing an impact map, as both a process and a tool for setting clear intent around the impact we want to achieve in our projects, and mapping the journey for getting there.

In the session itself participants will be developing their own personal impact maps, and will leave equipped with the tools to apply the same process in their work contexts.

As user centred designers and researchers, we should always ensure that inclusivity is at the heart of our practice.

In this talk, we use insights from our research with UCD professionals, seldom heard communities, charities and research participants to identify what more we could be doing in our user centred design and research practices to consistently and more effectively be more inclusive.

How you can make your organisation more customer centred

Session type: Talk

Speaker: Giles Colborne

When: 6th November 2022

Over the past year, we’ve surveyed hundreds of companies to understand how they work, and how well they’re able to support great user experiences. We’ve also spoken to design and business leaders at top performing organizations to get a richer understanding of why they are so different, and what it’s like to work there.

In his presentation, Giles will talk about what a customer centred organisation looks like, why not everyone makes it, and specifically what you can do to make your organisation more user centred.
