On a recent redesign of a financial services site we increased users visiting product pages by 40% and increased clicks on calls to action by almost 80% just by making sure the page designs were optimised around user needs and removing the elements that were distraction (and not of additional business value).

Here are some of the techniques we use to optimise design:

• We look at the effect of the colour of links and buttons, the order a page flows, the most appropriate imagery to use.
• We study the visual heat of a page. That is how to draw attention to the most important elements that you want users to interact with.
• We use eyetracking to see what users see on a page, and where they look instead of where you want them to! This helps us to remove clutter and put the right weight on each individual element.
• We look at ways to clarify copy to make the messages to the user simpler.
